Cell Phone Apps That Will Eliminate Distracted Driving

December 13, 2011

Cell phone companies are starting to realize the dangers of texting while driving.

It is no secret that the combination of cell phones while driving is a dangerous one, especially during the icy, snowy, winter months. Whether you are just making a quick run to the store or are making a multi-day road trip across the country to visit family for the holidays, the threat of auto accidents is lingering everywhere, and being distracted by a cell phone will only increase your chances of being involved in one.

When many people think of distracted driving, they often picture a teenage talking on their cell phone or a college kid texting at every stop light. And while these are often common scenarios to see when you are cruising down the road, young adults are not the only ones who fall victim to the dangers and crashes caused by distracted driving.

Because many cell phones nowadays have personal computing capabilities, older adults and business professionals constantly find themselves glued to these mobile devices. Whether you’re checking emails, setting appointments or sending memos and reminders, trying to complete these tasks behind the wheel can be just as distracting, if not more so, than text messaging while driving.

Luckily, many cell phone companies are recognizing the dangers that their devices may pose to both new and experienced drivers on the road. In order to help put a stop to distracted driving and the devastating injuries that these accidents can cause, many of these companies are developing their own personal apps that will put a stop to distracted drivers once and for all.

The Dangers Of Distracted Driving

When it comes to multi-tasking while driving, there are many different types of distractions that can keep our eyes off of the road. Visual (looking down at your phone to type an email), manual (using your hands to text message) and cognitive (becoming distracted by an in-depth or emotional conversation). When any of these types of situations occur, it doubles your reaction time and makes the driver less able to respond to roadway dangers.

Apps To Eliminate Cell Phone Accidents

Popular cell phone providers, such as Sprint and AT&T, have begun developing apps that will deactivate text messaging and incoming calls whenever someone is in a moving car. Once a car reaches a certain speed (somewhere around 10 mph), all of your incoming distractions will be erased, aside from up to five numbers you may set to come through and 911, of course.

Many of these apps also include a special parental feature that will notify a parent or guardian when their teen driver has deactivated the feature while in a moving car.

While it is important to exercise your own common sense and self control when it comes to distracted driving out in the snowy, icy weather, the use of these types of cell phone apps will help to ensure that there are less cell phone-related car accidents on the road and that we are using our faithful mobile devices for more good than harm.
