Whiplash Exercises

Whiplash Exercises

Your physical therapist may give you whiplash exercises to perform at home between office visits. Here are a few strengthening and range of motion exercises to help speed up your whiplash recovery.

Range of Motion Exercises
  1. Sit in a straight-backed chair with your feet flat on the floor. Extend your head and neck straight up, as if you were balancing a book on top of your head. With your neck extended all the way, slowly turn your head to the right as far as you can. Return to the center, and then turn your head to the left. Repeat this movement slowly, five to ten times.

  2. Slowly move your chin toward your chest, as if you were nodding yes. Hold this position for five to ten seconds. Carefully tilt your head to the right, then to the left. Return to your starting position, and repeat five to ten times.

Strengthening Exercises
  1. Place your right hand against your right cheek. While providing resistance with your hand, contract your neck muscles in a similar way that you would if you were trying to touch your ear to your shoulder. Hold this for five seconds. Repeat on each side, five to ten times.

  2. Place your right hand against your right cheek. While providing resistance with your hand, contract your muscles as though you were going to look over your shoulder. Hold for five seconds. Repeat on each side, five to ten times.
